The eIDAS 2.0 Regulation marks a new era for digital identity. The latest update to the European Union’s digital identity framework introduces key improvements, enhancing electronic identification. In this article, we will cover the main topics for a better understanding of the regulation.

What is eIDAS?

The EU adopted the electronic Identification, Authentication and trust Services (eIDAS) Regulation in 2014. It established a common framework for electronic identification and trust services across the EU Member States. This framework has been responsible for facilitating the use of electronic signatures, electronic seals, and timestamped electronic signatures and seals in cross-border transactions.

However, eIDAS 1.0 had several limitations. For example, it is important to highlight not only the complexity and difficulty of implementation for companies, but also the fact that it did not adequately address the needs of mobile devices. With the new update, eIDAS 2.0 is expected to make it easier and smoother for companies and individuals to use electronic identification and trust services.

Main features of eIDAS 2.0

As mentioned before, eIDAS 2.0 introduces several new features and enhancements that will make it easier for businesses and individuals to use electronic identification and trust services. These features include:

Digital ID Wallets: According to this new Regulation, EU Member States are required to provide EU Digital Identity Wallets to citizens within 24 months after the adoption of the implementing acts. This will enable citizens across the EU to prove their identity, access online services, share digital documents or simply to prove a specific personal attribute, with greater ease and security, as it will be possible to control what data is shared and who has access to it.

New Qualified Trust Services: This new version includes services such as the qualified electronic archive service and the qualified electronic ledger.

Cross-Border Trust Services: Facilitates the use of electronic signatures, seals, and timestamps in transactions involving parties in different countries, with the mutual recognition of trust services between all Member States.

Qualified Electronic Certificate of Attributes: It will be possible to obtain a valid electronic attestation from a qualified service provider, for example regarding our personal data, education, age, marital status, driving licence, identity cards, etc.

Mangement of Electronic Signatures and Seal Creation Devices: It will be possible to create qualified identities remotely, without the need for physical presence, significantly simplifying electronic signature processes.

Additionally, eIDAS 2.0 strengthens security through advanced technologies, streamlines processes for greater efficiency and provides clear legal recognition for electronic transactions. It also simplifies cross-border trades, offers improved and user-friendly online experiences and ensures strong data protection.

Benefits of eIDAS 2.0

By simplifying processes and reducing administrative burdens, eIDAS 2.0 helps businesses to reduce costs and increase efficiency. Enhanced security measures protect against fraud and cyberattacks, ensuring the safety of electronic transactions for both individuals and organisations.

The improved customer experience, with more convenient and user-friendly online services, can lead to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty. Additionally, eIDAS 2.0 facilitates cross-border trade and collaboration, opening up new market opportunities for companies.

Finally, the clear legal framework and recognition provided by eIDAS 2.0 gives businesses and individuals the confidence and security needed to conduct electronic transactions with legal certainty.
